OnePlus Confirms New Handset As OnePlus Nord Leaks

Yesterday saw OnePlus’ CEO and Founder Pete Lau talk about the need for a new OnePlus experience. The day before that he ran an online competition to win a OnePlus One. Now we have a new leaked name for an upcoming device. You don’t need to be Columbo to see what’s going on, but let’s step through this.

First up, Lau discussed a new approach to smartphones. While the OnePlus flagship range – typified by this summer’s OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro – has been the sole driving force, the Shenzhen-based company is now looking at another area. From Lau’s post on the OnePlus forum:

“Never Settle has always been at the core of OnePlus. For more than 6 years, that has meant working hard to always deliver the best experience for flagship smartphone users. However, as we’ve grown together with our community, we know that there are many people who want a really solid smartphone that meets their everyday needs, and for a more accessible price.”

If you think this reads like the mission set out by the OnePlus One when it was launched in 2014, you would not be alone. After all, OnePlus ran a giveaway this weekend for an original OnePlus One, something that seemed tailor made to fire up the community:

“But how do you get the word out around the OnePlus Z, the benefits of the hardware, and the power of the price? Well, you go back to basics, you energise the community, and you use their social media presence to amplify the signal”

Leaked details for certification authorities and online benchmarking tools over the past few weeks have been building up a picture of the new handset, and the details from OnePlus have added enough color to make out what the manufacturer will be offering.

As for the name? Well, OnePlus Nord has been heavily suggested. That detail appears to have been leaked via a short-lived instagram post, picked up and retweeted by noted tech watcher Ishan Agarwal:

“#OnePlus officially reveals the name of their new project: #NORD #OnePlusNord #NordByOnePlue”

The question now is if OnePlus Nord will become a range of OnePlus handsets, of if Nord by OnePlus will allow for a new ‘Nord’ brand to emerge and stand apart from the parent company?
